I'd prioritize being genuinely ready over hitting an arbitrary prep timeline. A good coach can help you determine whether your current condition makes a certain show realistic, but nobody online can tell you that accurately from a generic number of weeks. Give yourself enough runway to make gradual changes, keep your training productive, practice posing, and still have the ability to adjust if progress isn't going according to plan.

Don't forget to plan for posing. I made the mistake of treating it like an afterthought, and then realized pretty late that looking good in the gym doesn't automatically mean you know how to present your physique onstage.

I started 18 weeks out and it felt pretty manageable until the final month. That's when the hunger, extra cardio, posing practice, and general fatigue started adding up. Looking back, I'm glad I didn't try to squeeze the whole process into 10 or 12 weeks.

Around five months for me.

I usually recommend giving yourself more time than you think you need. You can always slow things down if you're ahead, but trying to lose a lot of fat in the last few weeks is a completely different situation.

That makes sense. I'm currently focused on getting my training and nutrition consistent before choosing a specific show. I don't want to rush into a prep just because I found a competition date I like.

My first prep was 14 weeks, and the biggest lesson was that the show prep really started before the official "prep" started. I spent months building muscle, getting my training consistent, improving my food choices, and getting my conditioning better. Once I officially started cutting, everything was much easier because the foundation was already there.

Sixteen to twenty weeks has worked well for me. The biggest thing is not picking a date and then trying to force your body to be ready by that exact day.

It depends on your starting condition. If you're already fairly lean and have a good amount of muscle, a shorter prep might make sense. If you're coming from a higher body-fat percentage, I'd rather spend more time getting into a good starting position before worrying about a show date.

I did 12 weeks my first time and honestly wish I'd started sooner. I got lean enough, but the final few weeks were rough because there wasn't much room left to make adjustments.
