Hi from a 34yo dad finally getting back into lifting after years off

Post by EthanBrown »

Hey everyone, Ethan here. 34, two kids, used to lift seriously in my early twenties then life happened and I let it all go. Back in the gym for six weeks now and feeling alive again. Joined to stay accountable and learn from people who've kept it going through the busy years.

Welcome Ethan! The 'comeback after kids' story is one of the most common ones here and honestly the most rewarding. Muscle memory is real, you'll get back faster than you think. Good to have you.

Welcome aboard. The biggest thing for parents is realistic, short, consistent sessions. Three solid 45-minute workouts a week you actually keep beats five you skip when a kid gets sick. Build it around your life, not the other way round.

That's exactly my worry - finding the time without it falling apart the first busy week.

Then keep the bar low enough that life can't knock you off it. A short session always beats a missed perfect one.

Welcome! Early mornings before the house wakes up were a game changer for me as a parent. Quiet gym, done before the day starts, no negotiating with anyone for the time. Might be worth a try.

Welcome back to the iron. Don't try to lift your old numbers from day one - the strength comes back quick and the temptation to ego lift into an injury is the main thing that derails comeback lifters. Ramp in patiently.

Good call, I already caught myself loading my old working weight on week one. Backed it right off.

Welcome! Set a tiny process goal rather than a number goal - like 'three sessions a week for a month'. Stack a few of those and the physique stuff takes care of itself. Accountability threads here help too.
