What Mobility Exercises Actually Help You Move Better in the Gym? 🏋️♂️🧘

Post by Zach-ST2 »

I’ve noticed that mobility work is way more useful when it actually connects to the movements you’re training. Instead of spending 30 minutes doing random stretches, I’d rather spend a few minutes preparing the hips, ankles, shoulders, and upper back for squats, presses, deadlifts, and other lifts.
For those of you training regularly, which mobility exercises have actually made a noticeable difference in your workouts?

Ankle rocks before squats have been a game changer for me. 🦵

90/90 hip switches are probably my favorite. My hips feel much less stiff afterward, especially on lower-body days.

I’ve been doing thoracic rotations and band shoulder work before upper-body sessions. Nothing crazy—just a few controlled sets. My overhead pressing feels smoother now, and I don’t feel as restricted through my upper back.

Couch stretch. My hips absolutely needed it after sitting at a desk all day. 😅

For squats, I like ankle mobility plus some body weight squat holds. It only takes a couple minutes, but I feel much more comfortable getting into the bottom position.

Dead hangs have helped my shoulders feel looser. I usually do a couple short sets rather than hanging until my grip completely gives out.

I’ve had good results with controlled shoulder circles and wall slides before pressing. They’re simple, but they help me feel more prepared instead of going straight from sitting at work to benching.

Honestly, consistency matters more than having some complicated mobility routine. I do a few movements that match whatever I’m training that day—ankles and hips before squats, upper back and shoulders before pressing, and some light movement before pulling. It takes maybe 5–10 minutes, but I feel noticeably better when I actually stick with it.
