Do You Really Need a Warm-Up Before Every Workout?

Post by DakBen787 »

A warm-up doesn’t have to mean spending 20 minutes on a treadmill before touching a weight. For most gym sessions, a few minutes of light movement followed by exercise-specific warm-up sets can help you feel more prepared for the workout. 🏋️‍♂️
For example, someone getting ready for heavy squats might use body weight squats, hip/ankle movements, and progressively heavier warm-up sets. Before an upper-body session, some light shoulder movement and easier pressing or pulling sets can make more sense.
The key is finding a routine that gets you moving, focused, and ready for the actual workout without tiring you out before the hard sets.
How much time do you usually spend warming up before you lift? 👇

Usually 5–10 minutes for me. Nothing crazy. 🔥

I used to skip warm-ups completely, but after a couple of rough sessions I started doing light cardio plus a few movement drills. I feel much better going into my working sets now.

I definitely think a warm-up is worth it, but I don’t think every workout needs the same routine. If I’m doing heavy squats, I’ll spend more time getting my hips and ankles ready and then gradually work up with lighter sets. For an easier workout, my warm-up is pretty short. 💪

Depends on the day. If I’m already warm and moving around a lot, I don’t need a huge warm-up.

My favorite warm-up is honestly just doing the first exercise with lighter weight and slowly adding plates. Simple and effective.

I give myself about 10 minutes before lifting. 🚀

For leg day, I definitely take warming up more seriously. A few minutes on the bike, some dynamic movements, then several squat warm-up sets before I get anywhere near my working weight.

I never warm up just to “check a box.” I use it to see how my body feels that day. If something feels tight or off during the lighter sets, I adjust the workout instead of forcing it.

Cold gym + heavy deadlifts = absolutely not 😂. I need to get moving first.
