Finally training legs heavy and my confidence in the squat rack changed everything
For two years I stuck to the machines in the corner because the squat rack area felt intimidating. Three months ago I started barbell squatting properly and I genuinely walk into the gym like a different person now. Anyone else find heavy lower body work changed more than just their legs?

100%. The day I out-squatted half the guys waiting for the rack, the intimidation just evaporated. Strength on the bar translates straight into how you carry yourself everywhere, not just the gym.

Yes! I spent so long worried about 'bulking up' from squats and deadlifts. Reality is I got stronger, my legs look better than ever, and I stopped caring what anyone thought about me being in the rack.

The bulking up fear is exactly what kept me on machines for so long.

It's such a myth. Building noticeable size is hard and slow even when you're trying. What you actually get is shape and strength. I wish someone had told me two years earlier.

Welcome to the good side. My tip now that you're hooked: learn to set up the rack and bar height confidently and quickly. Half the intimidation is fumbling with the pins while you feel watched. Once the setup is automatic you own the space.

That's so true, the setup used to fluster me more than the lift.

Find your form on lighter sets first though. I rushed to add weight to keep up with people and tweaked my lower back. Nail the brace and depth, then load it. The confidence means nothing if you're hurt.

Noted - I have been adding weight fairly quickly, I'll make sure my form holds.

Film a set from the side now and then. It's the most honest coach you have, and it'll tell you if depth or back position is slipping before an injury does.
