Anyone else feel like competition prep is harder mentally than physically?

Post by Matthew Allen »

I've been thinking seriously about entering my first bodybuilding competition, and honestly, the closer I get to committing, the more nervous I feel. The training doesn't scare me as much as the long prep, strict diet, cardio, posing practice, and staying disciplined when progress starts to slow down.
I'm curious for those who have competed before—what was the hardest part of your prep, and what do you wish you had known before stepping on stage for the first time?

For me, the hardest part was definitely the final few weeks. Training was manageable, but the fatigue and hunger really started testing my mindset. You have to trust the process and stick to the plan. 💪

The biggest lesson I learned was not to leave posing until the last minute. I thought I could just learn it a few weeks before the show, but presenting your physique properly takes practice just like lifting does.

I underestimated how much time competition prep takes. Between meal prep, training, cardio, posing, recovery, and everyday life, it can feel like a second job. 😅

My advice would be to get a good coach if it's your first show. Having someone experienced guide your training, nutrition, and posing took away a lot of the guesswork for me.

Don't rush into a competition just because you want to see how lean you can get. Make sure you actually enjoy the process. The stage is one day, but the preparation takes months.

The mental side was the hardest for me. Some days you look in the mirror and think you're making amazing progress, and the next day you feel like you've gone backward. You really have to stop judging yourself every single day and trust the bigger picture. 👊

One thing I wish someone told me is that your first competition doesn't have to be about winning. It's about learning how your body responds, experiencing the process, and understanding what you need to improve for the next show.

I competed once and honestly, the final week was an experience I'll never forget. The excitement of seeing months of work come together was incredible, but I also realized how important it is to have realistic expectations. You might not bring your absolute best package the first time, and that's okay.
