How Much Protein Do Women Really Need to Build Muscle?

Post by FitChick_Jess »

Protein is one of those topics that comes up constantly in the gym, especially when women start focusing on building muscle. You’ll hear everything from “just eat more protein” to people recommending extremely high amounts.
For women who regularly strength train, a practical daily range is often around 1.6–2.0 g of protein per kg of body weight (about 0.7–0.9 g per pound). You don't need to hit the exact number every day, though. Your total diet, training, recovery, sleep, and consistency all play a role.
I’ve found that spreading protein across the day is much easier than trying to make up for it at dinner. Eggs, chicken, turkey, fish, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, tofu, beans, and protein shakes can all help. 🥚🍗🥛
For the women who lift regularly—do you actually track your protein, or do you simply make sure each meal has a good protein source?

When I first started lifting, I seriously underestimated how little protein I was actually eating. I thought having chicken at dinner meant I was covered, but breakfast and lunch were basically carbs and coffee. Once I started adding eggs, yogurt, and a protein shake when needed, getting enough became way easier.

I don't track every single day, but I make sure I have protein with breakfast, lunch, and dinner. That keeps me pretty consistent without making food feel like homework.

Same! I thought I was eating “high protein” until I actually tracked a normal day. There was a pretty big difference between eating protein occasionally and intentionally getting enough throughout the day. 🙌

I'm around 0.8g per pound most days, but I don't stress if I miss it once in a while. Consistency over weeks matters more to me than hitting the exact number every day.

Chicken, eggs, cottage cheese, and tuna are basically my meal-prep squad right now. 😂

I noticed a difference when I stopped trying to cram all my protein into dinner. Having 25–35g at several meals is much easier for me, and I'm not sitting there at 9 PM trying to figure out how I'm going to eat another giant serving of chicken.

I don't use protein powder every day. Sometimes it's just convenient after work when I don't have time to cook. 🥤
