There’s nothing wrong with wanting to look lean or defined, but building muscle can completely change how you approach training. Whether it’s getting stronger on squats, adding reps to your hip thrusts, or finally getting comfortable with the barbell, the mindset seems to be shifting toward performance and long-term gains. Are you noticing this change in your gym, and do you think more women are starting to enjoy lifting for muscle and strength rather than just “getting toned”?

It feels like the conversation around women’s fitness is changing. Instead of only chasing a smaller number on the scale or trying to “get toned,” more women seem to be embracing actual strength training, building muscle, and treating hypertrophy as a legit training goal. You’re seeing more women tracking their lifts, focusing on progressive overload, and getting excited about hitting a new PR instead of only worrying about calories burned.

I’ve definitely noticed more women in my gym using the squat racks and dumbbells instead of spending their entire workout on cardio machines. A lot of them are tracking weights and reps now, which is awesome to see.

For sure, and I think social media has helped normalize women actually wanting to build muscle. The whole “I don’t want to get bulky” fear seems way less common now, and more women understand that getting noticeably muscular takes years of consistent lifting, nutrition, and recovery.

Strength goals are way more motivating for me.

I started lifting seriously because I wanted better definition, but eventually I got hooked on getting stronger. Hitting a new PR or adding another rep to a set feels way more rewarding than simply watching the scale move.

I’m seeing it with beginners too, which is probably the biggest change. Women who used to tell me they only wanted to “tone up” are now asking about progressive overload, protein intake, hypertrophy, and how to structure their sets. That’s a pretty big mindset shift compared with a few years ago.

Same here. I think “toning” was always kind of a vague way of saying “I want to lose some fat and build some muscle.” Now people seem much more comfortable actually saying they want to gain muscle and get stronger, which makes training goals a lot easier to understand.

I’d take a strength PR over a lower scale number any day.

The confidence change is huge too. Once you start seeing your numbers go up on squats, deadlifts, rows, or presses, you realize your body is capable of way more than you thought.
